You can walk a marathon without training as long as you’re physically fit enough to do so. You should also be sure that you have no underlying medical conditions or injuries. But, we recommend at least some training before leaping in. 26 miles is a long way!

You can run a half-marathon with no training, and some people do the same but eventually end up with sprained ankles and knees. If you are not active or do not indulge in physical activities, you must practice for this event. Running long distances without practice can cause GI distress and other problems.

0:01 – My thoughts the night before the race. Talking through why I’m doing it and my preparation. 4:15 – I show you my breakfast before the marathon. 5:34 – The run! 7:55 – A few hours after the run. How I’m feeling and my experience running the marathon.

Here are 8 lessons I’ve discovered in all of that running (and thinking), one for each week of training. 1. The difference between a 100-miler and a shorter ultra is almost entirely mental (really). The training itself isn’t much different at all. Like I said, there’s only one run longer than 31 miles.

So as your training moves to the trails, your training schedule will change to perceived exertion or heart rate guided, time-based runs. 3. Eating and Drinking. Ultramarathons are long, so you are going to have to figure out a solid nutrition and hydration strategy. Failure to do so often results in failure to finish. Gels and solids are much more energy-dense than sports drinks, and this in turn makes it a lot more manageable to hit high levels of carbohydrate intake during a marathon or other long-distance event. Always take energy gels with water, never alone and never with Gatorade. Without water, energy gels will take longer to digest and enter the
Take that first gel 30 minutes in and keep going. Don’t feel like fueling, check to see if it’s time and do it anyways. (Checkout these marathon fueling guidelines .) Keep checking in with yourself on total effort and stay close to your goal pace, no overshooting it or trying to make up time later.
